The Gimnasio Británico was from its foundation one step ahead since at this time it already offered its students many opportunities that not many other institutions offered, for example the institution had a small farm, zoo and laboratories that allowed learning to be done through observation, apart from its excellent academic level, based on investigation, comprehension, analysis and conceptualization

processes.

Since then it has been satisfying to walk towards success bringing with it growth, expansion and knowledge. Today, the Gimnasio Británico is one of the best known due to its high academic, sports and cultural levels and its international projection that allows students to be able to count on possibilities to improve their knowledge of English as a second language and share cultural interchange

experiences.

History

The Gimnasio Británico was founded in 1980, in the land of farms Hato Viejo and Los Rosales (10,000 square meters), located in the town of Chía. The institution was founded with the objective to offer the students an integral and bilingual education within a country style environment with many and spacious areas for recreation and fresh air, appropriate to shape the leaders of tomorrow guiding them to be able to face all of lifes challenges and to improve our country. The school began activities with a group of about 190 students, from nursery to fifth grade; by 1985 grades sixth through eleventh had been implemented and the institution had about 320 students. The necessary licenses had been authorized by the Ministry of Education for Preschool and Basic Elementary in 1983 and for High School in 1985.

To offer an excellent formal trilingual educational services based on national and international curricula, in an environment aimed towards the demands of a contemporary world. We are oriented to develop persons excelling in academic performance, the spirit of research, critical thinking processes, and possessing civic values that enable them to understand and respect multiculturalism, thus assuming the challenges of a highly technical and competitive world.

Vision

Maintain and strengthen the recognition as the first trilingual educational institution in Colombia, one that is in a constant process of modernization through immersion in new information technologies and commitment to the quality of services, led by three courses of action: competitiveness, social progress, and continuity of the educational and formative process towards a higher education that demonstrates development of critical and analytical thinking for each student.

Gimnasio Británico in Chia became the first school of Colombia to receive the Resolution that accredits it as a trilingual institution and which authorizes it to issue a Baccalaureate Academic Trilingual Diploma English,

Spanish and French to its students. The certification was achieved after students took and passed the international DELF level B test for the French Language. Being trilingual school means that students receive a Baccalaureate Diploma only after successfully passing the international TOEFL test for

English and the DELF test for French. Graduates have the opportunity to adjust their academic curriculum and even take two parallel undergraduate programs.

Admissions

Application to attend the Gimnasio Británico is made through the Admissions Department. The Head of the Admissions Department and her staff welcome prospective students to the Gimnasio Británico and acquaint them with the philosophy of the school and the many programs provided in addition to the traditional format as mandated by the Ministry of Education. They arrange tours by appointment throughout the fall term and during the Open House weekend and conduct the first of several interviews with prospective students and their parents when application materials are requested. The goal of the Admissions Department is to ascertain that each student admitted to the Gimnasio Británico will succeed and flourish under the rigorous standards of our academic community.

Academic

Preschool

The overwhelming majority of our students begin at the preschool level and continue on through completion of the eleventh grade. It is in our Preschool that their education begins, and we have carefully selected teachers and support staff to create a caring, challenging, individualized program to introduce these young students to the learning experience. Because we wish to inspire in our students a love of learning as well as to provide them with various techniques and methods of learning, we place special emphasis on the earliest years of training, where lifetime patterns and attitudes are often set.Our philosophy of developing the whole child and our commitment toencouraging individuation and independence mandates that classsize remain small and that teachers keep abreast of advances inacademic research. Most teachers have completed post-graduatestudies and frequently attend workshops and conferences to enlargetheir repertoire of teaching methods and incorporate innovations intheir curricula. A low student-to-teacher ratio allows for closesupervision and individual attention in an atmosphere of nurturanceand trust.

Elementary

In the Elementary Section, grades one through five, children are encouraged to "learn to learn" in an atmosphere that stimulates character development and fosters the acquisition of traditional values. They become seekers of knowledge who are also responsible citizens of their community. Our faculty and staff strive to develop in all students an awareness of their potential, a respect for their peers, and a sense of responsibility to their community while continuing a tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. They follow the curriculum set by the Minister of Education to acquire a strong base of essential knowledge, in English and Spanish language skills, reading, math, science, computer science, social studies, ethics, religion, physical education, health and sex education, art, music, dance and drama.Classes are taught bilingually and are 50 minutes in length with anaverage size of 25 students. There are 62 teachers and 8 aides toassure close personal direction for each student. Individualizedtutoring by faculty is available in all subjects from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.daily to assist students in obtaining their goals and achieving theirhighest potential.Most faculty hold advanced degrees beyond the baccalaureate andall have pursued post-graduate work to enable them to keep abreastof the latest developments in education and curriculum design.Conferences and workshops are often held at the school and in Bogotá with guest speakers from the U.S.A. and elsewhere who present new techniques and methods for possible inclusion in Gimnasio Británico programs. A global approach to learning provides the basis for the interdisciplinary instruction utilized in all grades of the Elementary School, and refinements to this system are frequent topics of seminars and annual meetings. The entire faculty maintain an awareness of educational advances and regularly incorporate them into their teaching when improvements in student performance seem likely. Overall, the Gimnasio Británico, endeavors to provide a compositeof learning in the Elementary Education Section, integrating elements of authority, community, and family to create a nurturing atmosphere where students experience cognitive, social, emotional, physical and creative development. Faculty and staff help students balance the demands of an intensive academic atmosphere with the normal adjustments of adolescence. Sophisticated technology, innovative and traditional teaching methods, imaginative programs and field trips, modern facilities and a well-trained support staff combine to assure that each student develops not only a mastery of the requisite academic basics, but also an inquiring and discerning mind and a strong sense of personal responsibility to community and to country in a rapidly changing world.

We at the Gimnasio Británico actively support and encourage our students to pursue excellence in every endeavor, to reach beyond their present boundaries to a future of challenge and unlimited growth of mind and spirit, and to seek to serve their communities as educators and educated contributors. In keeping with our philosophy of education we strive to shape responsible, reflective, and creative adults who will be able to face the challenges and decisions confronting them throughout their lives. In Junior High (grades 6 through 8) and High School (grades 9 and 11), the educational process takes on added dimensions as students become progressively more independent and self-reliant. Core subjects are taught in an increasinly rigorous and stimulating format and classes are departmentalized to accommodate the growing sophistication of student understanding and to permit an in-depth treatment of subject matter. Curriculum requirements for both the Junior High and the High School are set by the Ministry of Education and strictly followed by the Gimnasio Británico program. Students are thoroughly grounded in verbal, scientific and technological skills taught by qualified faculty in a modern, well-equipped setting. Academic emphasis is placed on English (listening comprehension, vocabulary, reading, grammar and writing) Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (introduction to Algebra I, Algebra I I , Calculus, Trigonometry and Geometry), Computers, Humanities (Philosophy, Ethics, Spanish, Religion, and Social Studies), Health and Sex Education, Physical Education and the Arts. Frequent field trips make lessons more tangible and take advantage of Colombia's diverse resources.Our Junior High and High School programs are designed to prepare students for college entrance and membership in their communities as upstanding citizens and educated leaders. Virtually all of our graduates go on to attend universities and professional schools. At the Gimnasio Británico students are taught to value commitment, integrity, compassion and respect for others, and they leave the Gimnasio Británico with a strong sense of self and a heightened awareness of their world, their potential role in it, and their impact on it. THE IB DIPLOMA AT GIMNASIO BRITÁNICOThe IB Diploma Program is followed by students from 10 and 11 Grades, this program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities. 1 Thestudents who follow the IB Diploma program will have 3 subjects at Higher Level (HL), 3 subjects at Standard Level (SL) and the compulsory components Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Action and Service.

MUSICThe basic elements of music - rhythm, melody, harmony and timbre, are taught from the earliest stages at the Gimnasio Británico. Preschoolers are introduced to music and dance in the form of games and exercises and in learning traditional folk and children's songs. Elementary students acquire a more sophisticated comprehension of musical forms, texture and structure and experience a broad range of musical styles in both listening and performance. Beginning at the age of 6 and extending through graduation, all children are given the option of enrolling in individual and small group lessons in flute, guitar, organ, piano, trumpet, violin and voice with qualified specialist teachers. Instruments are provided and practice rooms available for student reservation. Students are encouraged to explore their talents and interests via folk, classical, jazz, pop and contemporary forms in a variety of settings and ensembles.THEATREMembers of the Theatre Department at the Gimnasio Británico work with students from Grade Three and onward to teach the elements of elocution - pronunciation, intonation, inflection - in the reading of Spanish and English poetry and prose. In drama classes of the standard curriculum beginning in Grade Five and continuing through Grade Eleven, nonverbal components of communication, such as gesticulation, facial expression and movement are added as students become acquainted with the dramatic literature of South America and of the western hemisphere and begin to participate in dramatic readings in classes and theatre groups. Optional instruction is also given by the director and three assistants to Junior High and High School students in broadcasting and the art of theatre production.
SPORTSSports and physical fitness play a prominent role in the daily activities of the Gimnasio Británico community. The campus, with 6 basketball courts, 3 large gymnasia, 1 large weight training facility, 3 tennis courts, 3 racquetball courts, 6 soccer fields with surrounding prepared-surface tracks and 1 competition soccer field built to International Soccer Federation standards with surrounding regulation track and viewing stands, maintains extensive facilities for training and competition in many sports on its premises. From preschool through high school, students learn basic skills baseball, basketball, cheerleading, equestrianship, golf, gymnastics, skating, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The students are able to join any of the teams participate in competitions in other schools and the school`s sports tournament.NATIONAL SUMMER CAMPFor the past three years the Gimnasio Británico has offered parents and students the National Summer Camp for children between the ages of 3 and 15. This summer camp is open for all the children interested in enjoying their vacations while learning English and other fun activities. Summer Camp Colombia offers a space for recreation, fun and learning where free time is spent in a safe and organized manner with activities designed specially to stimulate the creativity and to develop new abilities in children in a country environment with many green areas and specialized teachers. This Summer Camp takes place from July 1 to July 31 and has many activities as well as field trips to different places giving the children the opportunity to have fun while they learn.
INTERNATIONAL SUMMER CAMPFounded in 1902, the Culver Summer Schools & Camps program is unique. It is a fun-filled, naturally beautiful 1,800-acre setting where over 1,350 young people from around the world, ages 7-17, develop positive self-esteem through accomplishment and self discipline. It is a high challenge-high support environment for learning leadership skills that improve personal confidence. (from culver.org)STUDY ABROADStudy abroad offers enriching and broadening experiences for seniors and recent graduates of the Gimnasio Británico. Through exchange programs established by our International Relations Department headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A., qualified students may enroll in courses at such prestigious institutions as Butler University (total enrollment 3,911) and Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (total enrollment 27,036), both located in the large urban setting of Indianapolis, and at Indiana University (total enrollment 32,298) in Bloomington, Indiana, and Purdue University (total enrollment 35,715) in Lafayette, Indiana, both small midwestern towns where the campus is the central focus of the community.

Academic Support

The Academic Support Department, staffed by psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists, was established to aid students in overcoming learning difficulties as they arise in the learning process. It is the responsibility of this office to see that all students follow a normal developmental pattern. When learning problems are identified, the staff works with parents and educators to tailor an individualized program to meet the student's needs and alleviate or remedy any problem. At the Gimnasio Británico, every child is encouraged and enabled to develop to his or her maximal potential in every area of learning, and the success of many students is often due to the intervention and assistance supplied by the staff of the Academic Support Department.COUNSELING SERVICESVirtually 100% of the Gimnasio Británico students proceed with professional studies both here and abroad upon graduation. For this reason, career counselors and college advisors from the Academic Counseling Department begin to work with students in the ninth grade. Through testing, conferences, and university experiences in the best universities in Bogotá students are individually guided in their preparation and career selection according to their interests, abilities, personalities, ambitions and talents. Every effort is made to assist students in choosing a career and identifying the best means to achieve it. Experienced and dedicated counsellors relate one-on-one with each student to ascertain that each of them who graduates from the Gimnasio Británico has the oportunity to obtain the professional aspirations, whatever they may be.

Well Being Support

MEDICINEThe Gimnasio Británico is respectfully aware of the confidence parents place in us by entrusting their children to our care. When accidents or illness occur, we have a doctor and two nurses available in the Medical Department to attend to the needs of students during regular school hours, throughout the after-school extracurricular periods, and during all athletic competitions and events. The three-beds clinic maintains an up-to-date collection of supplies, equipment and medication necessary to respond to the types of emergencies that may occur at an active day-school of some 2,500 students. Accidents and sudden illnesses rarely occur at the Gimnasio Británico, but when they do, parents and patients can rest assured that our professional medical team is on-hand and prepared to deal competently and compassionately with any situation that may arise. ORAL HEALTHThe school has a dentist during the school day in charge of different activities that promote preventive health and oral hygiene.The main function is to train students in various subjects to enable them to understand the importance of maintaining adequate levels of hygiene through brushing thereby controlling the appearance of different diseases.During the school year preventive campaigns and clinical assessments of students are carried out, as well as attending emergencies that may arise.

PASTORALAvailable to the educational community, spaces for human growth and maturity, especially spiritual, celebrating the Eucharist together, participating in liturgical actionas, reinforcing the personality by means of retreats, enjoying God´s forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, spending time in the preparation and celebration of Fisrt Communion and Confirmation, and providing time in which the heart can vent and get the confidence and guidance to continue in the life by God´s hand.CULTURAL AND SPORTS CLUBIs a pedagogical curriculum structure, responsible for contributing to the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children and young athletes and great artistic talent, with the aim of stimulating and artistic sport of accordance with the interests, understanding that the sport is health, recreation and / or performance and arts education develops its expression and creativity.GENERAL PURPOSE Promote recreation and leisure time to good use by the administration of an institutional program of sports training and formal cultural basis for development on the school premises, CAFAM Recreation Center and The Andalusian Riding School. COMPUTER LABORATORYLocated in the Elementary B section, the laboratory occupies just over 86 square meters. There are 60 individual stations separated by sound-absorbing 1.2-meter partitions, and each station is furnished with a computer equipped with all the requisite software and support materials necessary to meet the demands and challenges of the most recent advances in computer technology. The laboratory is designed for the comfort, convenience and efficiency of our students. It is used throughout the year by advanced students and for the annual Computer Olympics held at the Gimnasio Británico. For testing purposes, there is also a surveillance security system with video cameras and a central monitor and overall control panel located in a separate room. Software and hardware are continually upgraded in this facility to keep our students proficient in state-of-the art computer capabilities.LANGUAGE LABORATORYThe Laboratory is set up to allow students to select their own learning programs and work at their own pace using interactive formats to correct speech, learn phonetics, synthetize grammar and perfect reading and writing skills. Individual station units are equipped with seven channels, each offering a variety of programs of varying levels related to the principal topic of the channel. From a central control panel, the instructor can interact electronically with all stations by electing to send programs to several students at once, including material from the Internet on the central computer, or by projecting programs from the computer to an overhead screen for all to view. All new television and audio-visual equipment have been installed for individual and group learning of recorded language videos obtainable from many sources.
LIBRARYOur library, the hub around which all academic activity revolves at the Gimnasio Británico, is divided into three different sections according to student ages. Some new volumes were added to our growing collection, which now stands at 35,000. Via the World Wide Web, young researchers now have access to all the libraries, data banks, and web sites the Internet provides on 65 computers. A full-time computer consultant was added to the library staff of one librarian and two assistants to guide students and faculty in the use of these techonological resources, and twelve complete encyclopedias were purchased on CD Rom to further enhance the library's bound reference collections. Our library provides virtually unlimited opportunities for study, research and recreational reading.
LITERACY FRAMEWORKIs a complete system for teaching reading, writing and editing skills in English at the Gimnasio Británico. The program was instituted in July of 1997 and is on used in preschool through sixth-grade level students. Four classrooms designed and decorated along specific guidelines were constructed and five teachers were trained and exclusively assigned to the Literacy Framework project. Over 3,000 books, tapes and videos were purchased along with a wide variety of writing materials and art supplies, all as specified by this comprehensive literacy system. The Literacy Framework program offers our students a unique opportunity to learn to read and write and perfect what they know under the most favorable and individualized circumstances modern educational research can define.READING RECOVERYCírculos Literarios or Reading Recovery is a support program for reading and writing in Spanish, native tounge, and helps the students improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The main objective of this program is to give the students a space where they develop different activities to make learning grammar and language structures more interesting. The Reading Recovery program is offered only to students of age 5 or less and the classroom is equipped with all necessary resources and specialized teachers are available to help the small students do their best.

Nutrition

The Transportation Department is made up of a fleet of 70 buses to provide safe and reliable transit for all students and many teachers to and from the school and for the educational excursions planned for classes throughout the school year. All buses are furnished with air conditioning and audio-visual equipment and are routinely serviced under a strict and exacting maintenance schedule to guarantee passengers a comfortable, pleasant, safe and dependable ride. The Transportation Department ocuppies a central role in the smooth functioning of the school, drivers are carefully selected and trained: conscious of their responsibilities, they pride themselves on meeting the high standards that characterize the Gimnasio Británico as a whole. Each of the 100 members, drivers, bus monitors, mechanical engineers, mechanics, electricians, secretaries and assistants, of the Transportation Department team performs an essential task for the Gimnasio Británico.
The cafeteria serves 1000 people in eight self-serve lines per turn; students and all visitors will find themselves in a modern and upscale dining room with a cosy environment that not only will serve as a cafeteria but also it can be used as a general meeting area, special events, celebrations or many different activities programmed through out the school year. The cafeteria is fully equipped with modern dishwashers that washes and sterilizes all plates, cups and cutlery leaving them completely free from any types of bacteria, or germs making the students health be more safe which is one of many objectives of our school. The cafeteria uses the most modern kitchen for the preparation of meals and technology for the conservation of all types of food, meeting the highest hygiene standards.
